Information  on Relocating to Sudan

  • The capital city of of Sudan is Khartoum with about 2.3 million people. The political centre is also in Khartoum where the President resides. Sudan is a Islamic Republic.

  • Languages: The languages spoken are Arabic (official). English and many local dialects are widely spoken. The TV programs are in their original language. Satellite TV is available.

  • Population: The population is about 39.1 million people - 52% are black, 39% Arab, 6% Beja, 2% foreigners, 1% other.

  • Expat areas: Popular areas for the Expat community are Khartoum and Omdurman.

  • Housing: The availability of apartments and houses in the country and particularly in these popular areas varies. It is difficult to find a good apartment for rent, most of the time it will be a house. Both options are available but mainly depend on your company policy, income, and the length of your stay.

  • Cost of housing: Varies from area to area and the size of the house or apartment you'll pay anything from US$ 1500 to US$ 2000 monthly for an apartment and US$ 3000 and higher for a house. The local currency is Sudanese Dinar (sD).

  • Schools: We have the American, the British, the International and the French school available. Depending on the age we can tell you about a possible waiting lists, etc.

  • Transportation: Bus: Services run between the main towns and depart from the market places; however they are not entirely safe. Souk (market) lorries are a cheap but uncomfortable method of transport. Taxi: Also often unsafe, taxis can be found at ranks or hailed in the street. Taxis are not metered, fares must be agreed in advance.  It is preferably to rent a car.

  • Bank: The banks are open Saturday-Thursday 8.30 am - 12.00 noon.

  • Shopping: Is generally done from Saturday-Thursday 8.00 am - 1.30 pm and 5.30 pm - 8.00 pm.

  • Climate: Extremely hot (November to March). Sandstorms blow across the Sahara from April to September. In the extreme north, there is little rain but the central region has some rainfall from July to August. The southern region has much higher rainfall, the wet season lasting May to October.

  • Culture: The best entertainment is found in Khartoum and Omdurman, with the national theatre, music hall, cinemas, open-air and hotel entertainment.

  • Public holidays: January 1st-Independence Day; January (date varies)-Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice); January/February (date varies)-Islamic New Year; March 3rd-National Unity Day; April 6th-Uprising Day; April (date varies)-Al-Mowlid Al Nabawi (Birth of the Prophet); May 25th-May Revolution Anniversary; June 30th-Revolution Day; October/November (dates vary)-Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan); December 25th-Christmas Day.
