Information on Relocating to Jordan

·        The capital city of Jordan is Amman with about 2.5 million people. The political centre is also in Amman. Jordan is a Constitutional Monarchy.

·        Languages: The languages spoken are Arabic (official), English is widely spoken in the cities. French, German, Italian and Spanish are also spoken. The TV programs are in their original language. Cable TV is available.

·        Population: The population is about 5.9 million people - 98% are Arab,  1% Circassian, 1% Armenian.

·        Expat areas: Popular area for the Expat community is Amman.

·        Housing: The availability of apartments and houses in the country and particularly in these popular areas varies. Most Expats rent their apartment or house; some buy their homes. Both options are available but mainly depend on your company policy, income, and the length of your stay.

·        Cost of housing: Varies from area to area and the size of the house or apartment you'll pay anything from US$ 13000 - 24000 annual for a 3 bedroom apartment (furnished) to US$ 21000 – 40000 annual for a 4 bedroom apartment. For a furnished house/villa you will pay US$ 20000 - 57000 (3 bedrooms) to US$ 72000 annual for a 5 bedroom villa and even higher. The local currency is Dinar (JD).

·        Schools: We have the American and the British International School available. Depending on the age we can tell you about a possible waiting lists, etc.

·       Transportation: There are four types of public transport in Jordan: the big blue buses of the JETT company, which are air-conditioned and reliable but require booking well in advance; the white public buses and public minibuses, which are very cheap and go everywhere in the country; the white shared taxis that cover fixed routes and are called service taxis (they leave when they are full); and the yellow taxis that are not for sharing.

·        Bank: The banks are open from Saturday-Thursday 8.30 am - 3.00 pm. Hours during Ramadan are 8.30 am - 10.00 am, although some banks open in the afternoon.

·        Shopping: Is generally done from Saturday-Thursday 9.00 am -1.00 pm and 3.00 pm - 8.00 pm.

·        Climate: Hot and dry summers with cool evenings. The Jordan Valley below sea level is warm during winter and extremely hot in summer. Rain falls between November and March, while colder weather conditions occur in December/January.

·       Culture: There are nightclubs, theatres and cinemas in Amman, while some other major towns have cinemas. Often clubs will only admit couples or mixed groups. Many of the 4- and 5- star hotels have popular clubs and bars.

  • Public holidays: January 1st-New Year’s Day; January (date varies)-Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice); January 15th-Tree Day; February (date varies)-Islamic New Year; March/April (dates vary)-Good Friday - Easter Monday; April (date varies)-Eid al-Mawlid al-Nawabi (Birth of the Prophet); May 1st-Labour Day; May 25th-Independence Day; June 9th-Accession of HM King Abdullah; June 10th-Army Day; August 11th-King Hussein's accession to the throne; September 12th-Isra wa al-Miraj (Prophet’s Night Journey); November 14th-King Hussein Remembrance Day; October/November (dates vary)-Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan); December 25th-Christmas Day; December 31th-New Year’s Eve.
